Created by ____, the father of Zedd, the Onyx coin was a bethrothal gift to the father of Zedd's first wife, Loorna.  Loorna's father, Magette, was the supreme evil and most powerful adversary any ranger had ever met in battle.  Placing a spell on the strongest and most talented young man he could find, Magette created an evil ranger using the coin.  When Onyx killed Opal in battle, Garnet went into a rage that ended with his killing Magette, releasing Onyx from the spell.  Onyx fled from the fight he was engaged in with Jade and Amethyst, disappearing with the Onyx powers.

    Upon realizing what he had done, Onyx made a personal vow that he and his descendents would always protect the Gem Powers.  Therefore, when Coin bearer from Garnet's line fled toEarth, Onyx's family followed.  When the Gem coins were returned toZordon to be used to protect Earth, the spirit of the original Onyx visited his most worthy descendent, a teenage boy about the age of the other rangers,to explain the family history.  He then was charged to protect the newest Gem Rangers, and to remain unknown to them and the citizens of Angel Grove.
